Section 504

The Sanders Unified School District Exceptional Student Services Department monitors the provision of Section 504 Plans for those students who experience qualifying medical or mental health disabilities. Section 504 is a federal law designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Education.

How a student qualifies under Section 504:

Eligibility for Section 504 is a team decision.

Have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities;

Have a record of such an impairment, or

Be regarded as having such an impairment. Section 504 requires that school districts provide a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) to qualified students in their jurisdictions who have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
